I love Jose. It’s a shame his best years are being wasted on this rebuild and by the time the Sox are good he’ll be in the twilight of his career (if he’s not already). He never gets hurt and has driven in over 100 runs and had an OPS over .800 in every season prior to 2018…which is kind of my point.
How bad was the first base position this year that Jose Abreu won after having his least productive season? Better question…was this the worst Silver Slugger-winning season in American League history for the first base position?
Abreu hit less home runs than any first basemen who has won the Silver Slugger award except for Miguel Cabrera (2015, 18 home runs) and Cecil Cooper (1981, 18). Cooper and Cabrera both batted over .320 in their low home run total seasons while Abreu was at a mere .265
If you go through the Wikipedia list of Silver Slugger winners at first base (the most trusted source of baseball records) you’d be hard-pressed to find a worse season than what Jose Abreu put together in 2018. I’m sure he didn’t even know he was in the running until he actually won the award.
But hey, we love Jose anyway!
